The 1 st Series: The Basic Understanding of Bioethics

Health professionals holds such crucially important roles in people’s life. During the task of providing health care, health professionals often have to deal with human life, people’s welfare and many other issues that are closely related with ethical consideration. Thus requiring health professionals, especially doctors to have ethical skill, in which is also part of important component in medical professionalism. The Indonesian Medical Council has set guideline for physician’s standard of competencies, which covers knowledge, skills and behavior competence. The behavior component that’s translated into 3 area of competence (area 1, 6 and 7) showed the importance for health practitioners to posses the professional and ethical behavior during their service in health field. Currently ethic is still a knowledge/discipline that seeks for appropriate spot in medical/health fields, while the issues raised in medical and health recently are mostly rooted from ethical matter and dilemmas. Thus it becomes a concerned need to have health professionals with sufficient ethical knowledge and skills. Therefore ethics education for health professionals become one logical consequences in order to meet the previously mentioned need. Considering the present status of ethics education, which is still mostly placed as local content in medical education, it’s about time to start taking serious effort developing ethics education up to national scale, so that it will be compatible for comprehensive integration into medical curriculum in Indonesia. The next matter of concern would be the human resource to teach ethics in health field, hence the need to equip the already existing health professionals with ethical competence, in order to expand resource person’s capacity in teaching ethics according to their respective health major/disciplines.
